Who We Are

Marcus Zottis Rocha, Founder & Immigration Lawyer

Marcus Zottis Rocha

Founder & Immigration Lawyer

Marcus Zottis Rocha founded ZR Advogados and has practiced law in Brazil since 2012 and in Portugal since 2020. He holds an LL.B. from PUCRS (2011), a postgraduate qualification in Public Law from UFRGS (2013), and an LL.M. in Public International Law from the University of Lisbon (2024). He has also completed training in Legal English for Business Law & Contract Law (C1 Level – CEFR).

Through ZR Advogados in Lisbon, he gained broad experience advising international clients on cross-border matters. Recognising the demand for structured legal support for those moving to Brazil, he leads Zottis Sociedade Individual de Advocacia’s inbound immigration practice in Brazil — a distinct offering that builds on that experience but is not the same as the Lisbon office.

His practice focuses on immigration law, citizenship, human rights, business, and international legal matters. Having lived in Portugal as an expat, he brings personal insight into the migration journey and advises with clarity, empathy, and strategic judgment.

Catherine Rezende Barros

Immigration Lawyer

Catherine Rezende Barros has practiced law since 2017 between Brazil and Portugal, where she began her professional practice in 2018. She holds an LL.B. from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2017) and an LL.M. in Civil Law from the University of Lisbon (2024), with research focused on arbitration.

Her experience in Portugal and Brazil covers immigration, visas, citizenship, and arbitration, with a strong international dimension in personal and asset-related matters. That cross-border perspective supports Zottis Sociedade Individual de Advocacia’s work for clients who plan to live legally in Brazil while staying closely connected to the firm’s wider practice culture.

As someone who has navigated international relocation herself, she provides attentive legal support to families, women, and clients seeking stability in a new jurisdiction.

Together, we advise those who want to come to or live in Brazil — mostly expats, investors, digital nomads, retirees, families, and international professionals — on Brazilian immigration, residency, visas, citizenship, and the legal aspects of relocating.

Our Story

Zottis Sociedade Individual de Advocacia was born from a practical need. Marcus, through his work with ZR Advogados in Lisbon since 2020, saw that expats, investors, and digital nomads wanted structured legal support to move to Brazil—not just ad-hoc advice.

He founded Zottis Sociedade Individual de Advocacia to fill that gap: a Brazilian firm dedicated solely to visas, residency, and citizenship. Zottis Sociedade Individual de Advocacia grows out of the cross-border experience Marcus and Catherine built in Portugal, but it is a distinct service. We are not an extension of the Lisbon office; we are a separate practice focused on helping people move to and live legally in Brazil.

Thais joined the team bringing years of on-the-ground experience in São Paulo and across Brazil. Her work with government agencies and immigrant support organisations has given her deep knowledge of Brazilian immigration law, refugee and statelessness matters, and the lived reality of those seeking residency and rights in Brazil. Together, our team combines international expertise with local insight.

The firm’s international perspective was shaped through years of practice in Lisbon — one of Europe’s most active hubs for clients from the United States, Europe, and Asia. Working with expats and investors on cross-border matters deepened our understanding of what international clients need when they consider Brazil.

Our Core Solutions

Visa, residency and citizenship options in Brazil — clearly structured for expats, investors and international families. We help expats, digital nomads, retirees, investors, and foreign professionals understand the main legal pathways to live legally in Brazil, with strategy tailored to each case and to the current requirements of Brazilian immigration law. Brazil’s digital nomad route requires foreign-source work and income, the retirement route is tied to pension-based income, investment residence follows statutory thresholds, and naturalization depends on the legal category and residence history.
